About
In the old town of the city of Jaén there was, since the fifteenth century, a large health building called Hospital de San Juan de Dios. Thanks to private donations and the patronage of the Municipal Council, this health institution became, over time, one of the longest-lived hospitals in Spanish history, and the longest-lived in Jaén. For several centuries it obtained the merit and honour of becoming a true model of care that managed to spread throughout the Spanish monarchy.
Around a landscaped Renaissance courtyard, with arches supported by Tuscan stone columns in the lower cloister, and Ionic in the upper cloister, are the auditorium (old chapel from 1771, rebuilt after the fire of 1916), the archive and library with a room for researchers and a café-bar in the artistic basement. The glass gallery on the first floor is home to the management's office, exhibition halls, management, general secretary and meeting room. On the second and last floor, offices and rooms for conferences and meetings.
