About
Baeza Cathedral stands out in the historic-artistic ensemble formed by Plaza de Santa María.
It was built over the remains of an old mosque, and since then has undergone numerous architectural transformations to reach its current appearance.
Thus, the Puerta del Perdón (Door of Pardon), which dates from the 15th century, is Gothic, while the main façade is Renaissance in style, the result of major remodelling work performed in the 16th century under the direction of Jerónimo del Prado with the collaboration of Andrés de Vandelvira. The oldest part is the Puerta de la Luna (Door of the Moon), 13th century Gothic-Mudejar. Inside Baeza Cathedral the iron screens by the master Bartolomé, the wrought-iron pulpit and the Baroque-style main altarpiece are of special interest.
The Cathedral Museum, located in the chapter house and the cloister, contains magnificent paintings and religious objects, as well as a valuable collection of religious tunics and other garments dating back several centuries.
