About
The Castle of Baños occupies the highest part of the Cueto hill, in the heart of the old town of Baños de la Encina. Its construction is of Andalusian origin and dates back to the twelfth century; it was built by the Almohads, probably in the context prior to the battle of Navas de Tolosa. Its wall was originally made up of 15 towers built in "tabiya" (rammed earth), although today one of them is covered with stone, forming part of the Christian footprint on the monument next to its inner citadel.
Together with the old town of Bañusco, it has been a Historic-Artistic Site since 1969, and it is not only a castle, but inside there is also an archaeological site from the Bronze Age (Argar culture) and Roman vestiges belonging to a funerary temple. Thanks to its construction system, so resistant, it is currently one of the best preserved castles in terms of the originality of the monument.
