About
The Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla is considered the most important bullring with the greatest bullfighting tradition in Spain, which is why it is popularly known as the "Cathedral of Bullfighting". Originally built with wood (1733) on the Baratillo mountain (which is why it is also known as "Coso del Baratillo"), it is one of the oldest squares in Spain and the first with a circular (oval) shape.
The tour of the square's lines is complemented by a visit to the Exhibition Hall-Museum, located in the area under the stands, at the height of lines 10 and 12. It consists of two clearly differentiated sectors, the first contains a sample of paintings and a selection of the collections of bullfighting prints that belong to the collection of the Real Maestranza, one of the most important in the world: it has a collection of oil paintings from the eighteenth century, XIX and XX that make up an art gallery with a bullfighting theme of great importance.
The second, older sector establishes a sequence that begins in the origins of the Real Maestranza, with a space dedicated to the games played by the nobility in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and a large display case with a varied representation of servants of the square in the eighteenth century: timbaleros, desjarretadores and lancers. A silk poster from 1740 and a maestrante's uniform donated by H.R.H. the Infante Don Carlos of Bourbon Two Sicilies and of Bourbon stand out.
The visit continues through the Stables of Rejoneador Horses to a corner of high spirituality, the Chapel of the Bullfighters, presided over by an altarpiece of the Virgin of Our Lady of Charity, which enjoys great devotion among the right-handers and to which they have donated numerous votive offerings.
