About
The Plaza de España, framed in the María Luisa Park, was designed by the great Sevillian architect Aníbal González as an emblematic space for the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929. Its semi-elliptical shape is a symbol of the embrace between the ancient metropolis and its colonies. In addition, the building that borders it faces the Guadalquivir, the place from which the journey to America begins.
Its proportions are lavish; it has a total area of 50,000 square meters, making it undoubtedly the most imposing square in Spain. Along the entire perimeter of the square there is a 515-metre-long canal, which you can travel aboard a boat.
The four beautiful bridges that cross the canal represent the ancient kingdoms of Spain. The main attractions of the square are its semicircular lake, the twin towers, the benches in which 49 Spanish provinces and its beautiful coffered ceiling appear, through tiles.
The Plaza de España has fallen in love with several film directors and has appeared in famous films such as Lawrence of Arabia or Episode II of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. The central space, with more than 31,000 square meters, makes it a suitable stage for a multitude of large events, with a maximum capacity of 10,000 people.
