About

The Museum of Malaga is located in the capital of Malaga.

The Museum of Malaga is one of the 63 Spanish museums of state ownership and regional management, in this case transferred to the Junta de Andalucía.

The inauguration of the Museum of Malaga in the Palacio de la Aduana is the culmination of a long-awaited project, begun more than 10 years ago, with the aim of providing the Museum with a stable and representative headquarters but also of proposing a renovation in the presentation of its collections that is the result of in-depth research of its collections, with special emphasis on archaeological pieces.

As a result, and using attractive museographic proposals for all types of public, the Museum of Malaga is positioned as a national benchmark.

This advance in the field of museum management is based on an exhibition discourse that conceives the museum as a space of confluence and collaboration between the main institutions dedicated to conservation and research.

The fundamental objectives of the Museological Plan and the programmes and projects developed for the opening of the Museum of Malaga have been the definition of the identity and mission of the institution, the rehabilitation of the museum combining respect for its historical and architectural values with its adaptation to the functions required by a current museum, and the diagnosis, fine-tuning of the collections and the new arrangement of the permanent exhibition.

In other words, we are facing a Museum that bases its identity on the uniqueness of its collections, the historical nature of its institution and the recognition and roots it has in society.

The archaeology collection, organised into seven thematic blocks, stands out in unique pieces such as the Lorinigiana collection, the Neanderthal skeletal remains of Zafarraya, the lithic collections of Nerja, the grave goods of the Dolmens, the Phoenician tombs of Chorreras or Calle Refino, the Roman Mosaic of the Birth of Venus from Cartama or the ceramic and wooden grave goods medieval of the Alcazaba.
