About
The Columbian Festivities are the most emblematic celebration in Huelva and one of the great events of the Andalusian festive calendar. Their origin dates back to 1880, when they were created to commemorate the departure of Christopher Columbus ' expedition from the nearby Port of Palos de la Frontera on August 3, 1492, a historical event that marked the beginning of the encounter between Europe and America. Since then, the Colombinas have evolved into a festival that combines the memory of this historical legacy with an extensive cultural, musical, sports and leisure programme, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
For several days, the Columbian Enclosure becomes the heart of the city. Its streets are filled with stalls open to the public, attractions for all ages, restaurant areas and spaces dedicated to crafts and local commerce. Gastronomy occupies a prominent place, offering the opportunity to taste such representative products as Iberian ham from the Sierra de Aracena, seafood and fish from the Huelva coast, white prawns or wines from the D.O. Condado de Huelva.
The musical program is one of the main attractions of the festivities. Each edition brings together renowned national and local artists in free concerts that cover genres as varied as pop, rock, flamenco, urban music, indie or verbena orchestras. In addition, the venue offers performances by Huelva groups and shows for all audiences.
The institutional character continues to be one of the pillars of the celebration. The official inauguration, the traditional lighting and the commemorative events of August 3 recall the close link of Huelva with the Discovery of America. In addition to this, there are official receptions, tributes and activities organized by institutions and cultural entities that keep the Columbian legacy alive.
The offer is completed with an intense sports programme, which includes tournaments and competitions in disciplines such as sailing, golf, tennis, football, basketball, athletics or water sports, as well as exhibitions and popular events. There are also children's activities, exhibitions, equestrian shows, fireworks and numerous cultural proposals that make the Columbian Festivities a unique experience, where history, tradition, fun and hospitality come together to show the best image of Huelva.
